When people think of Thebes they usually think only of temples and tombs, but there was much more to this ancient city. The worker's village at the Deir el Medina is a magnificent example of how artisans lived in Middle Kingdom times. Malqata, which lies to the south of the Medinet Habu, is the site of the royal palace of Amenhotep III. and although there is little of it left now it does demonstrate the sheer size and scale of the buldings of the times and the complexity of its intricate canal system at Birket Habu. The Colossi of Memnon although misnamed and actually part of a temple complex, now stands alone, forlorn and facing east to greet the rising sun.
